City of Bones by Cassandra Clare is about a fifteen year old girl who witnesses a murder at a club.
The “murders” have weird tattoos and cool knives. She is the only one that sees the murder, and she thinks she’s going crazy (rightfully so). After her mom goes missing, she gets introduced to one of the Shadowhunters (yes, that’s what they’re called) who is named Jace. Guess what? They hunt demons. Isn’t that cool?
When I first bought the book, I was worried that I wouldn’t like it. In the end, I didn’t like it. I loved it.
I don’t know why, but when I read it, I was reminded of Keeper of the Lost Cities. Again, I have no idea why. The books aren’t really similar in any way, but I do think it’s why I loved it so much.
I loved (almost) every character in this book. Clary specifically was so exciting to read about. She is still one of my favorite FMCs of all time.
I’ve heard a few people call the series cringy, and I can definitely understand why. Even if I don’t agree, I can somewhat understand why they say that.
One of my favorite quotes: “Don’t touch my weapons without permission.” (Jace says this, I believe). “Well, there goes my plan for selling them on eBay,” Clary muttered. “Selling them on what?” Clary smiled blandly at him. “A mythical place of great magical power.” (City of Bones, page 101)
In the end, this was a full bloom book for me! I recommend it for anyone, especially those who are wanting to get into fantasy. The age rating I would give this book is 13+.
